How to speed up your mac wake-up time from hibernate sleep
|

|
Are you running an Apple macbook, mini or iMac?
You may have noticed it's quick to load when you leave it alone for half an hour after sleep, but leave it alone for over an hour and well.. it takes a little longer for it to react. So this isn't so much as a problem, but is a design feature. Some may say an annoying design feature. The cause is due to the machine going into hibernation mode after a set period of time. Hibernation is designed to put the computer into a deeper version of a sleep state after an hour of non-use. It does this by copying the contents of your RAM to your hard drive and then powering most of its internal devices down. When powering back on, it then writes the entire contents copied to the hard drive back to the RAM. Obviously the more that is in use, the longer it takes for the machine to become live again. |

Hibernation on an SSD drive, this is not recommended, as performing more writes to the drive will descrease it's life expectancy. You can also completely disable hibernation mode if you wish. This is your choice and we will show you how to do this as well. But beware, on a laptop, sleep mode will use more of your battery life then hibernation mode. If the battery runs out in this time, any data open and not saved will be lost. There is a simple hack to change the hibernation mode settings, but beware it will consume more power, so use caution when running on a laptop. As always this nifty little trick will improve performance, but any changes you perform are done at your own risk. If you are not sure what you are doing, then please call us if you are on one of our contracts or seek professional assistance. OK, let's begin. To change the hibernation time from an hour to a longer period, we will first need to oepn a terminal window on your mac. To open the terminal window, you can go to Finder, open Applications, scroll down to Utilities, and locate Terminal within the utilities. Alternatively you can also press the "cmd" + "space" keys at the same time to open spotlight in the top right had corner of your screen. Type Terminal and press click on the result for Terminal (it will have a black square next to it). In the terminal we will enter the following commands: sudo pmset -a standbydelay 3600
Where 3600 will equal 12 hours. This will mean that your machine will not go into hibernation mode unless not used for more than 12 hours. You can change this number to suit for how many hours you require, where an hour is 300. When entering this command, you will be requested to enter your password to complete the command There shouldn't be much of a battery life tradeoff by prolonging how long it takes standby mode to kick in. If you charge your MacBook every day, then you shouldn't need anything more than 24 hours. The best thing to do is play around with it and find the best timing for your daily schedule. If you would prefer to completely disable hibernation mode, then type the following command into the terminal window: First we must make a note of the current settings. Enter the command below to make a backup of your settings to the desktop in a file called current_hibernate_mode.txt sudo pmset -g | grep hibernatemode > ~/Desktop/current_hibernate_mode.txt
You can also see the current setting within the terminal by running the following command:
sudo pmset -g | grep hibernatemode
We will then run the below command to turn off hibernation mode.
sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0
Finally, if your machine was set to mode 3 or 7, we will recover some drive space by running the following commands:
cd /var/vm
sudo rm sleepimage
This will remove the old sleep file from the hard drive. If you ever return to the new style sleep mode, the sleepimage file will be automatically recreated when you execute the sudo pmset command—yes, it creates the file as soon as you execute the command, not the first time you put the machine to sleep. For reference, the following hibernate modes are available;

Uh, oh. Server number 5 has had its motherboard blown out again. That's not good.
Luckily we have 24/7, 4 hour business critical support. Thank goodness we paid through the nose for that, this is the fourth time this year that servers gone down and it runs all our vital database services, but it's surprising it's done so well for an 8 year old box. So four hours to get an engineer here with a replacement, a two hour swap out, power the server back on and let's see how much data we lost and if we need to perform a full systems state recovery. Only 12 hours down this time around, but it could've been so much worse don't you think? Sound like a familiar story? It's all too familiar to us. And yes. It could've been a lot worse. 4 hour business critical isn't the best value for money, we know. But it can be a life saver. But why does it need to be a life saver in the first place? We want to introduce you to virtualisation. What is it and what are the benefits I hear you say? Well, with virtualisation, we can give that 8 year old tower, coughing up its last dusty coughs a whole new lease of life.

Those computers have to communicate with something and those cables they use have to go somewhere.
The rack cabinet is a generally overlooked part of networking and computing in general, and yet it does so much for us.
A bit like all the veins in your body, the life blood of data communication runs through those fibre and copper cables. So they really should be looked after. INSPYREone will manage all of your patching and cabling routes, we will ensure the equipment in the rack is in optimal positioning to decrease cable runs. We will also minimise the possibility of network loops (which can be disastrous and we have seen it take down entire networks before), through simplicity. We don't just do all of this because it's aesthetically pleasing to keep a rack in tip-top shape. It has benefits that far outweight what you would expect to your systems stability as well. By keeping them clean and running freely, not only is it easier to manage, allowing us to add new patch runs quickly, but it also increases the airflow to your systems, prolonging your equipments lifespan and using less power and energy to keep them running cool. But the most important things of all, health and safety is improved by reducing trip hazards and fire risks are dropped by removing the hazards of dust collection. So it looks good and saves on energy costs. Sounds like it's a no-brainer to us.
